Preserving Special Fabric

This specific plaid fabric appears throughout this quilt.
It really adds charm and character to the overall design!

Preserving it is very desirable for Color/Visual continuity in this quilt, not to mention nostalgia value.

White muslin foundation fabric shows through shattered areas of this fragile piece.

Adjoining green piece is almost completely deteriorated and can not be salvaged.
It will be removed and replaced.

Custom-dyed red silk underlay.

Green piece and silk debris have been removed
and surrounding area was lightly vacuumed.
(See Quilt Care page)

Original plaid piece is repositioned over
the red silk underlay.

Note how the underlay fools the eye as it covers the muslin.

The underlay also provides stability for the repositioned plaid.

Custom-dyed silk crepeline overlay will
contain and protect the plaid silk piece.

Red underlay, plaid original silk, and crepeline overlay “sandwich” has been stitched in place. This particular remedy   treats the area as a permanent replacement piece, which will provide stability and protection for the plaid.

Neighboring Green has been replaced.

Re-embroidery completed on green.

Re-embroidery completed on plaid.
